Discovery of new epigraph boon for historians

On April 22nd, an international symposium on epigraphy was held at the Tang West Market Museum in Xi’an. The symposium was co-organized by the Society of Chinese History of the Tang Dynasty and the Society of Chinese Literature of the Tang Dynasty. A central topic of discussion was the newly found bilingual epigraph on the tomb of Ge Chuo, a Uighur Prince during the Tang Dynasty, which included both Chinese characters and Turkic runes. Experts indicated that this is the first known bilingual stone inscription with Chinese and Runic scripts from Tang Dynasty in China. It will fill in the blank of document literature of ancient Turkic scripts in East Asia and expand scholars understanding of ethnic relations and cultural exchanges in that era.
