Text and image studies examine the logical relationships between literature and visual imagery, presenting as an research method based on the fundamental categories of verbal icon and image, with comparison of text and image at its core. The application of text and image studies in modern Chinese literary research displays theoretical awareness and modern academic consciousness in three specific areas: the study of literary journal covers and novel illustrations; the study on linguistic rhetoric in modern poetry; and author studies through a lens of a text and image relation. The cross-media and interdisciplinary nature of text and image studies reflects an open academic stance. Text and image studies contributes to building a localized theoretical discourse by integrating China’s academic traditions with modern consciousness.
