Cheng Qianfan’s literary criticism thought was born in the context of the transformation of Chinese academics from tradition to modernity in the 20th century. It is rooted in the Chinese academic tradition and has distinct characteristics of the times. Cheng Qianfan’s literary criticism thought is based on literature, emphasizing that literary criticism should achieve “precise integration of literary theory and Philology” on the basis of the dialectic of “feeling” and “knowing” and the interaction of “ability” and “knowing.” It targets different problems at different stages of development, but its inner spirit remains unchanged. The contemporary value of this thought lies in the research approach based on literature and the dialectical spirit and future-oriented significance.
