Dialogue in Writing on Chinese Historical Research in the New Era

Editor’s Note: On January 3, the Chinese Academy of History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences was established in Beijing. Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China(CPC), President of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, sent a congratulatory letter expressing his warm congratulations on behalf of the Party Central Committee, and extended his sincere greetings to Chinese historians. He emphasized the need to sum up historical experience, reveal historical laws, and grasp historical trends to accelerate the construction of a disciplinary system, academic system and discourse system of history with Chinese characteristics.

In the morning, the symposium on Chinese Historical Research in the New Era and the opening ceremony of the Chinese Academy of History were held in Beijing. General Secretary Xi’s congratulatory letter was read at the symposium. Huang Kunming, Politburo member and Minister of the Publicity Department of the Party Central Committee, participated in the ceremony and delivered a speech which said that we must conscientiously study and implement the spirit of the important instructions of General Secretary Xi, earnestly enhancing our sense of responsibility for doing a good job in Chinese historical research in the new era, running the Chinese Academy of History well, adhering to the right political direction, uniting the best historians to concentrate on research with practical applications, and enhancing the level of Chinese historical research to make our due contribution to the great rejuvenation of China.

At the symposium, eight experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing Normal University, Peking University, Nanjing University, Yunnan University, Renmin University of China and other bodies offered their advice on how to conduct Chinese historical research in the new era from the perspective of archaeology, ancient Chinese history, modern Chinese history, world history and other disciplines. In order to thoroughly study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions, we offer our readers a set of the speeches of the eight experts at the symposium in the form of a dialogue in writing.
