The Destiny of Rural Writings in Social Transformation

China is witnessing an intense and profound social transformation from a traditional agricultural society to a modern, urban, industrial and technological society. In this process, the rural narrative, which had been the mainstream of literature for a century, has gradually declined while the urban narrative has increasingly risen. This change has profoundly affected current literary creation and the future of literate afar. In confronting with the social and literary transformation, writers and critics should consciously inherit the classical literary tradition, reflect on classical and modern literary experiences, and promote Chinese literature to the modern age and the world.
