Reading European environments: historical perspectives

(Abstract)

Christof Mauch

Unlike the political demarcation between East and West Europe, those between the South, Middle and North Europe are divisions in the  perspective of environmental history. Such factors as geography, climate and density of population are important. From the Antique to the modern times, there have been different representive events and important topics in the environmental histories of the three regions, which is largely related to different natural resources and the differences of their industrial and agricultural activities. With München and Bavaria as examples, I explain the important role of environmental elements, especially water, in environmental history.
