“Group Pattern” and “the Differential Mode of Association”: Binary Opposition or Binary Coexistence?
(Abstract)

Xie Lizhong

The relationship between group pattern and the differential mode of association, as described by Fei Xiaotong, or the relationship between group life and ethical relationship, as described by Liang Shuming, is not binary opposition, but binary coexistence. They are the two basic levels of the social structure of human beings at all times and in all places, which are difficult to prioritize and coexist simultaneously. Recognizing this will not only be of great significance to help us better understand the structure and functioning mechanism of human society, but also to better understand the relevant theses of Fei Xiaotong and Liang Shuming, as well as to the resolution of some of the relevant debates in the current academic discussions.
