A Materialist Historical Perspective on the Chinese Path to Modernization
(Abstract)
Sun Leqiang
The dominant logic of production in Western societies is the shift from use value to exchange value and then to surplus value. By contrast, the dominant logic of social production in China is manifested in the shift from material production to the logic of total production. The Chinese path to modernization differs from Western modernization in its origin, development path, material basis and goal, and represents the future direction of human development. The development process from Marx and Engels’ “two most radical ruptures” to China’s “Two Integrations” is a necessary requirement for the transition of the historical mission from revolution to construction, and an unavoidable way to promote the Chinese path to modernization and build a new form of human civilization.
